The BEST Onion Dip

If you grew up in the '80s, '90s, or early 2000s, chances are you've had French onion dip made from one of those little powdered packets. You know the one—mixed into a tub of sour cream and served in a bowl surrounded by Ruffles potato chips. It showed up at birthday parties, backyard barbecues, football Sundays, holiday gatherings, and just about every family get-together.
For me, that dip is pure nostalgia.
To this day, someone in my family still puts out a bowl of French onion dip with Ruffles chips at every holiday and family party. It's one of those recipes that never goes out of style. No matter how many fancy appetizers end up on the table, everyone still gravitates toward the onion dip. It's comfort food in its simplest form.
A few years ago, I started wondering if I could recreate that same nostalgic flavor using real ingredients. Around that time I discovered Collective Foods Umami Seasoning, and everything changed. It has that deep, savory onion flavor that reminds me of the classic packet, but tastes so much fresher and more complex.
Instead of dried onions, I slowly cook fresh shallots until they're soft and sweet. A splash of Worcestershire sauce adds richness, and the umami seasoning ties everything together. Once it's folded into cool sour cream, it becomes everything I loved as a kid—but elevated.
The hardest part is waiting.
You can absolutely eat it right away, but this dip gets even better after a few hours in the refrigerator. The flavors have time to mingle, the shallots soften even more, and somehow it tastes even closer to the French onion dip I remember growing up with.
Serve it exactly the way we always have—with a bag of hearty potato chips to stand up to the weight. Light chips just won't cut it! Sometimes the classics don't need reinventing, just made with a little more love.
Enjoy!
Crack Onion Dip
Ingredients
1 pint sour cream
2 shallots, thinly sliced
1 tablespoon olive oil
1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce
3 teaspoons Collective Foods Umami Seasoning
Method
Heat the olive oil in a skillet over medium-high heat. Add the sliced shallots and cook for about 5 minutes, stirring occasionally, until soft and translucent.
Stir in the Worcestershire sauce and Collective Foods Umami Seasoning. Turn off the heat and stir until everything is well combined.
Allow the shallot mixture to cool for a few minutes before folding it into the sour cream.
Serve immediately, or refrigerate for several hours. Like many great dips, this one only gets better with time.
